Ollie Bearman has been handed a ten-place grid penalty at Silverstone — here’s why.

Oliver Bearman’s first home Grand Prix weekend has taken a bitter turn: the young Haas driver has been handed a ten-place grid penalty at Silverstone for breaching regulations under red flag conditions during FP3.

Bearman had already drawn attention earlier in the session when a piece of bodywork detached from his VF-25, bringing out a red flag as marshals were forced to intervene. But the most serious moment came later, during a second red flag triggered by Gabriel Bortoleto (Kick Sauber), who ended up in the gravel.

While returning to the pits, Bearman lost control of his car at the pit lane entry, crashing into the barriers and damaging his front wing — all under red flag conditions, a serious violation of the sporting code.

In their statement, the stewards noted that Bearman accelerated to 260 km/h at the pit entry, simulating a race scenario despite the red flag being in effect. Telemetry data confirmed he was significantly faster than what would be considered a normal pit entry even under race conditions.

“There is no doubt that the driver of car 87 failed to proceed slowly towards the pit lane, as mandated by the regulations,” the stewards’ report stated.

“Furthermore, he lost control of the car and hit the barriers. The fact that the brakes were not up to temperature may have contributed to the incident, but it was not considered a mitigating factor.”

In addition to the grid drop, Bearman has also received four penalty points on his Super Licence, bringing his total to eight.

A bitter blow for the 20-year-old Briton, who had dreamed of a weekend to remember at Silverstone — the very track where his full-time Haas seat was announced last year. After a stunning sixth place in FP3, he will now be forced to start near the back of the grid on Sunday.
