Charles Leclerc finished his race in sixth place after throwing away a potential third place on the final lap.
A podium that slipped away on the final lap. Charles Leclerc admitted his guilt at the end of the race, recounting the incident that saw him drop from third to sixth place in the space of just a few kilometers, in a single lap. From the overtaking by Oscar Piastri, before the final straight, to the mistake in the first sector that cost the Monegasque Ferrari driver a podium that would have been very useful for the championship. Leclerc was deeply disappointed, and he commented on the incident at the end of the race.
Leclerc said: “What happened in the end? We didn’t have any wing problems. The idea was to let Piastri pass to get a boost on the last lap and try to pass him again on the final lap. I handled the first three corners terribly, and it was an unacceptable mistake. After a near-perfect start to the season, I can’t afford these kinds of mistakes, and I’m honestly angry. The pace to win wasn’t there, but we were getting the most out of it; I’m just disappointed about my mistake.
The early pit stop? There are things we need to address together; we had maximized everything until the last lap, until I threw it all away. I feel sorry for the team and the fans; it’s unacceptable.”
